Fly rod building is a complex art. The team at Freestone Fly rods are passionate about their rod building. It's what they do. It's not a job. It's who they are...
Finite Element AnalysisThe Freestone Fly rod team of Sam Druckman and Berand have taken fly rod building to the next level. Together, they have developed a state of the art softwatre that uses Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Finite Element Analysis is used to create a deflection model of the Freestone fly rod under load -- before the fly rod is even built. While other fly rod companies use computer "design" to help them engineer their fly rods, finite element analysis allows the Freestone fly rod designers to make incremental modifications to their Freestone fly rods before the rod is ever produced. Why makes Finite Element Analysis better? FEAhelps fly rods increase their strength and durability. Most "engineered" fly rods fail due to small design errors that which cause one portion of the fly rod to work harder than another part of the fly rod. FEA can electronically magnify small design errors during the design phase of the fly rod and allow the designers at Freestone fly rods to correct those design errors. This allows for fly rods that perform flawlessly over their fly fishing lifetimes. Finite element analysis allows the team at Freestone Fly rods to strategically select and manipulate materials to optimize the ulitmate performance in their Freestone fly rods. With so much emphasis today placed on the materials used to make fly rods, it is easy to understand the confusion this creates for most fly anglers when understanding fly rod performance. While it is true that different rod building materials will make fly rods perform differently, the material used in the fly rod blank is not the distinctive or exclusively defining feature of any fly rod. Most fly rods today are made with carbon-fiber and glass-composite prepregs, typical materials used in the aerospace industry. The performance of a great fly rod is far less about the material that its made from than how that material is used to embody a performance idea.
