Just opened a new XL Max (8-9 wt), well made but I was surprised by how small it was. When I checked the specs I noticed that the spool is the same size (4") and it holds the same amount of backing as the XL (6-7 wt), how could that be given the size difference in the line. A call to Nautilus revealed that they use the same body on both reels but a deeper cut (smaller arbor) spool on the XL Max. Makes for a very light 8-9 reel but the smaller arbor means a slower retrieve, not a plus on a set up where you could have a bunch of line out. Quality appears to excellent but the design is questionably, at least to me.
