Abel Fly Reels

Abel Fly Reels — SDS, SDF, Rove, Vaya & TR

Abel has been building machined fly reels in the United States since 1988. Today all Abel reels are machined and assembled in Montrose, Colorado, where Abel shares a manufacturing facility with Ross Reels under Mayfly Outdoors. Each reel is cut from 6061-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum, hard anodized for durability, and assembled with tight tolerances that have long defined the brand.

Abel reels are known for a few distinctive traits. Large external drag knobs that allow precise adjustment. Extremely durable anodizing. And one of the widest ranges of factory customization in fly fishing, including solid colors, fades, fish graphics, and hand-painted finishes.

The current lineup ranges from traditional trout reels to fully sealed saltwater designs.

Abel SDS (Sealed Drag Salt)

The SDS is Abel’s flagship saltwater reel and the evolution of the company’s long-running Super Series.

SDS stands for Sealed Drag Salt, referring to a stacked carbon fiber drag system that is completely sealed from water, sand, and debris. The drag is designed to deliver high pressure smoothly, which is essential when powerful fish make long, sustained runs.

These reels are commonly used for tarpon, permit, bonefish, striped bass, and other strong saltwater species. A large arbor spool increases line pickup, and the frame is built to withstand the stress of heavy lines and powerful fish.

For anglers targeting large saltwater species, the SDS represents Abel’s most robust reel platform.

Abel SDF (Sealed Drag Freshwater)

The SDF adapts Abel’s sealed drag design for freshwater fishing.

While it shares many of the same internal drag components as the SDS, the reel is sized for trout and freshwater species. The sealed carbon drag protects the system from grit, moisture, and debris that can accumulate during regular river use.

SDF reels are often chosen for larger trout, steelhead, and freshwater streamer fishing, where a stronger drag and reliable startup are useful.

Abel Rove

The Rove series blends modern machining with a vintage reel aesthetic.

Inspired by classic fly reel designs, the Rove features distinctive porting patterns and retro styling while retaining a modern sealed carbon drag system. The reel offers the look of traditional gear with the reliability and strength of contemporary construction.

Rove reels are commonly used for trout, light steelhead, and freshwater fishing where anglers appreciate both performance and classic visual design.

Abel Vaya

The Vaya is Abel’s lightweight, modern trout reel.

It features a large-arbor spool and a sealed carbon drag system in a streamlined frame that reduces weight compared with earlier Abel designs. The reel balances well on contemporary graphite trout rods and retrieves line quickly thanks to the larger arbor diameter.

Vaya reels are typically fished on 3- to 6-weight rods for dry flies, nymphing, and general trout fishing.

Abel TR

The TR series is Abel’s traditional click-and-pawl trout reel.

Instead of a disc drag, the TR uses a spring-and-pawl mechanism that provides light resistance and the classic outgoing click many anglers enjoy. The design is simple, lightweight, and extremely reliable.

TR reels are commonly paired with lighter trout rods and dry-fly setups, where the reel primarily serves as line storage and gentle resistance rather than heavy drag pressure.
